Virtual ATM Activity

Screenshot of the ATM practice activity available at www.gcflearnfree.org.

Here is a real-world simulation which is great for both listening and reading practice. It focuses on the steps necessary to use an ATM in English. Take a look at the screenshot of the activity which is posted above. The lady you see (at the top of the picture) in the mirror of the machine is trying to withdraw some money from her bank account. You will have to complete her transaction for her.

The activity has a recording of her voice, and she will give you some instructions. You will also see her instructions printed next to the right side of her face. First, you must insert the ATM card by dragging it with your mouse pointer into the slot on the right side of the machine. Then, you will have to use the mouse pointer again to click the buttons on the number pad to enter her PIN (personal identification number) to access her accounts. Then, you will have to click on the buttons to the right of the ATM screen to make the correct selections.

If you follow her instructions correctly, the ATM will give you some cash. Simply click on it to take it. Also, don't forget to take the ATM card and the receipt before leaving! Lastly, if you need her to explain or repeat one of her instructions, simply place your mouse pointer over her face. Do this once to get her to explain her instruction, and do it twice to get her to repeat it. Click here to start the activity. Good luck!

If you would like to speak English clearly (like the lady at the ATM), you should check out the Speak English like an American course (aff). It's great for accent reduction and improving pronunciation!
